Beside the Point's Main Plot
Beside the point takes place in 2311, three-hundred-four years from now. At this time the world is recovering from a world war, World War IV to be exact.
It had been a war between the two dominant races, whom had formerly been able to live in peace without coming in contact with one another. But when a clan of human thieves and murderers destroyed an entire vampire city, children and all, the hope for a lasting peace was left behind.
It was Samuel Collier of the human race who had declared war on the vampire nation, and Steven Phylan, the vampire lord willingly returned the favor. It wasn't long before the human race seemed to be dying out. They were swifter, yet weaker, faster but not fast enough, and the blood-sucking monsters were just too hard to kill. To behead thousands of enemies on a battle field while you yourself are at the point of a blade is no easy task. Human lives were taken, and the vampire population grew until a surrender and a peace treaty were finally worked out.
Steven was very merciful when discussing his terms with Samuel. First, the human race would live on as they once always have, and Steven promised to continue to keep his kind's teeth off their necks. Second, human and vampire beings would live among each other, no more of this separation that had been going on before the war. Thirdly, he made a statement, if a large portion of the human race ever legally attacked a vampire civilization again, he would see that the entire species as well as half breeds would be wiped off the face of the earth. Converted if not killed.
With these arrangements came many new laws. A vampire was disallowed to take the life of a human being without that being's consent. Any establishments that segregated the two species would be torn down or sold, and the manager would spend five years behind bars.
Things seemed to be working out between the two, after a few years most humans had vampire friends, and vampires had human friends as well. Samuel Collier kept in touch with Steven Phylan and the two discussed court cases and worked out conflicts between the two races. They became quite close friends over the years. But before long, both of the two knew that Samuel was growing old, and would be in no shape to keep track of the human race after a short while. Which is why the honor of ruling the race was offered to his son, but Aelin Collier refused to accept it.
Aelin had always been a part of the UWSO (United we Stand Organization), a strong group of supporters for peace between the two races. He was much more interested in becoming head of this organization than owning one of the races himself. It would have been the chance of a lifetime, but he believed things would be better if Phylan took power over both races, as they were one. But of course, his father wouldn’t have it, and if Aelin wasn’t going to take the honor, he’d have to make sure someone else did.
Then came Sinlan Kajun, a greedy man with no better purpose but to destroy every blood-sucking creature on earth, which automatically included half-breeds. His goal was to once again start a war, but this time he’d make sure that mankind was put back on top where it belonged. Or so he felt. Vampires had always disgusted him, and he’d spent his entire life making plans to wipe them out. Luckily he is still far from achieving war, with two reasonable, wise rulers of both races, no one of matter is about to listen to him. Along with the UWSO fighting against him verbally, he is no where close to fulfilling his promise to rid the world of this heartless, mindless monsters. But if not Aelin to take over the rule of the human race, whom? And will this person see that the treaty between the two races is followed? Either way, that’s Beside the Point.
